Professor John Toumbourou


Professor John Toumbourou is based at Deakin University. He is the Chair in Health Psychology within the School of Psychology and the Leader in Intervention (Prevention) Sciences within the Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development (SEED). He has been influential internationally and nationally in assisting the development of research and practice in the fields of prevention science and health psychology.


Our sector understands the economic benefits to the nation and the long-term outcomes for children and their families by investing in prevention and early intervention programmes and approaches in our service delivery. While we have made significant progress in identifying risks facing children and preventing or intervening early on at the outset of problems, fiscal and resource constraints and current outcome reporting requirements all too often hamper us from doing more.
Family & Relationship Services Australia (FRSA) in partnership with Deakin University have launched the report Strengthening prevention and early intervention services for families into the future, which argues for our sector’s universal and targeted services to take a more holistic and coordinated public health approach to prevent eight priority health problems: substance abuse; anti-social behaviour (including Family Violence); obesity; mental illness; developmental injury; chronic illness; school failure; and social exclusion.
By drawing upon this report, the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 2009-2020 and the know-how in the room, this workshop will explore how we can best to improve developmental and wellbeing outcomes for children across the three conference themes by fostering meaningful discussion around:
– * How can our sector better address risk factors facing Australian children by taking greater prevention and early intervention approaches in our service delivery?
• * What greater investment must we and government make to build our capacity for better implementing and evaluating prevention and early intervention approaches we take?
